Reading Goal: Diversity Authors

I mentioned this post in my April 2021 TBR. This post should come out in the beginning of April. Racial equity is something I grew more cognizant of at UC Berkeley. So it’s an important conversation to have, especially in the current American climate! I may not be able to storm the streets, but we can have these conversations.

Something I really wanted to do in my reading was feature and read authors who are people of color (POC). To help me do this I’d blog these titles. As I read a book from a POC, I’d list the book title here, along with my experience (along with my book reviews)! I just feel it’d be a cool way to chronicle what I pick up! 🤞🏽 hopefully IF you read, you might consider these titles!

Note: Will be updating as I go, please check back!

Right now have so much to read, I can only manage 1 title/month. WILL read more, you should too!

I also wanted to use this post to highlight videos I’ve seen about reading POC authors!

Spaulding Group

Monthly zoom meeting

Used to attend group daily when I was in inpatient therapy upon my 1st and 2nd strokes ♥️ Really missed this group and the structure they provided in my life…

Would usually start group with introductions all around, then we’d share new, and finally do some sort of OT activity, geared towards individuals who’ve experienced a stroke.

In some ways, I feel the same comeodery with my book clubs! Not many stroke survivors are not as young as me… So as I search for a support group with someone in my age group. I feel a comradery with bookish people 👏🏽

So in the meantime, virtual group and book clubs will have to do! 😂 Love that it stills allows me to attend group. The people may be different, but we still share similar experiences and obstacles in life!

Migraines EST 2002

Ever since 12 year old… I’ve had migraines… They are common in my family… My dad has them, my sister, some of my cousins… Severity varies but they are present…

Note: From what I remember…

I had my first migraine in 7th grade… I was at the mall with friends. I remember we were at the food part and then I started to feel like some pain in my head until I went to the bathroomI remember we were at the food part and then I started to feel like some pain in my head until I went to the bathroom, as I was walking back from the bathroom I just felt very nauseous. I threw up in front of the kids playground at the food court (I really hope the kids didn’t see 😂)

That was my first migraine. From then on Michael and continue to plague meFrom then on Michael and continue to plague meFrom then on Michael and continue to plague me. When that happened, i’d catch a ride to my best friends house and I would stay there until my headache surpassed…

When I had my stroke, I just thought it was a headache. Headaches are just a part of my normal life… It wasn’t until I was unable to walk today but no something was really wrong and so I called for help.

I, honestly, wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for her(I Will be eternally grateful🙏🏾). I was rushed to the hospital and luckily they were able to treat me quickly.

Unfortunately this was not my first trip to the ER that weekUnfortunately this was not my first trip to the ER that week. I was there because they said nothing was wrong with me… Imagine my story if I hadn’t been sent home… I have perplexed my medical team. I was it a typical Stroke patientstroke patient.I was it a typical stroke patientI was it a typical stroke patientI was it a typical stroke patient… I was only 29 years old, relatively fit and active, and had no prior personal medical history to speak of… so why did I have a stroke?

After many tests, it was discovered that my blood was hyper coagulable. That means that my blood tends to form plus more quickly and that was the cause of my stroke…

Note: Each stroke is different! Depending on what part of the brain is affected, disabilities may vary…

Signs & Symptoms (S/S) of a stroke:

Facial droop

One-sided weakness

Everyone may show different S/S depending on what part of the brain is affected!

Strokes are time-sensitive!

Golden hour 🪟 = 1 hour

Time from recognition TO treatment!

Treatment depends on what kind of stroke you are having!

Types of stroke:

Ischemic: Caused by a blood clot

Commonly treated with TPA

May require a lifelong blood thinner

Hemorrhagic: Caused by a brain bleed

Find the bleed! May require surgery…

Risk Factors (Considerations):

Some physical conditions pre-dispose you to strokes:

– Probe to internal bleeding

– Prone to hyper-coagulation

High BP

* A commonality among people of color (diet)

Note: There may not be a correlation between migraines and stroke… I, just personally, couldn’t differentiate between the 2… Just what to be aware for…

Social Media (SM) role on getting the word out…

Transcribed by Phillip villanueva

Since we are in a pandemic, I recognize it may be hard to live right now. For me, social media (SM) allows me to interact on a wider scale and I’m thankful for that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m aware of the dangers of social media (catfishing, fraud, etc.) so I am hesitant about being on the net. My partner and loved ones have told me many times to be careful, I am grateful for the concern and I am being careful. It could be said I hide behind my blog but I prefer to liken myself to Ms. Whistledown (?) From Bridgerton. Do I think too highly of myself? I may not be creating a gossip newspaper but publishing content I care about.
Like mentioned previously, my stroke was a sad moment in my life because I had a Master’s degree in nursing but I couldn’t really do what I wanted to do. This is why this blog is so important to me. I feel that even though I am unable to go out and take care of patients at the bedside, I can still stimulate conversations about issues that patients and caregivers may be susceptible to.

Stroke All Over Again 🙄

January 2018

I just got discharged from the inpatient rehabilitation I was in. Again, pardon the cloudiness… I remember I was drinking water… But I choked on the water 😮 That was atypical of me. I’ve never had a hard time with my food and drink before… Luckily, I was to see my former speech-language therapist (SLP) that day… She assessed me, was concerned, and I went back to the hospital 🏥…

After more tests, I finally found out I had my strokes because I’m hyper coagulable. Again, that means I easily form blood clots…

Book Blogging Plans

https://listenwirhprecious.com/2021/03/31/book-blogging-plans/

I decided to compile this list for readers who may be paying attention to my blog. Thank you for so much for doing so! I wanted to incorporate reading into my blog partly because I just don’t know if my life is interesting enough to block. If interested I have a separate list for like my friends and my family if you’re genuinely interested in knowing about my recovery process! 👏🏽 thank you for your time!

Book Blogging Plans

A system… I don’t know if anyone noticed but I function better in systems… Lists, charts, tables are my jam! I’m new to blogging, especially book blogging… So I thought it’d be better for me to create a system and outline rules for myself…

  1. First 5 chapter check-in – Usually the groundwork is laid
  2. OMG moments – Update after the chapter following the event
  3. Book completion – Needs an explanation? 😋

So you can expect me to blog at these times. I reserve the right to enjoy my book as I wish though. More like guidelines than rules… I’m kind of just making this up as I go! Let me know if I should or how you’d like updates!

I feel like having a system in place might help me focus better (and read 😋)! So these posts are plentiful at first BUT there’ll will STILL be weekly life updates! Now I’m less anxious about them! 😂
